Wayne County Healthy Families provides supportive services to first time parents and
their families. These services promote healthy child development and build on the strengths of resilient healthy
families.
PERSONAL VISITS
Connection with the Healthy Families program begins with an initial visit when one of our team
members, a Family Resource Specialist, assesses how Birth‐to‐Five can best serve the family. If the
Healthy Families program is the best home visiting option, then the family is offered weekly home visits
with a Family Support Specialist. At Birth‐to‐Five, all Family Resource Specialists are certified
Parent Educators. Similar to Parents As Teachers, they meet with the family in its home to discuss
child development and to enjoy parent‐child activities.
SCREENINGS
A developmental screening is completed at least annually. This screening allows families an opportunity to
connect with early interventions, such as speech therapy or physical therapy, if a delay is detected. Screenings also include hearing and vision questionnaires.
GROUP MEETINGS
Weekly playgroups meet throughout Wayne County in elementary schools, churches, and community
centers. Adults and young children enjoy meeting new friends as they play side‐by‐side. A Parent
Educator is available and parenting topics are addressed each month.
Book Buddies is for children ages 3‐5 accompanied by an adult. These one hour workshops include
music, games, crafts, snacks, and of course—books! Each child leaves with a new book and families are
encouraged to repeat activities from the workshop in their homes.
RESOURCE NETWORK
Wayne County has many programs and resources for families with young children. Birth‐to‐Five’s staff
assist families in connecting – from the local library story hour to adult education opportunities…and much, much more!
