Parents as Teachers

Parents As Teachers provides the information, support and encouragement parents need to help their children develop optimally during the crucial early years of life.

PROGRAM GOALS

  • Increase parent knowledge of early childhood development and improve parenting practices.
  • Provide early detection of developmental delays and health issues.
  • Prevent child abuse and neglect.
  • Increase children’s school readiness and school success.

PERSONAL VISITS

A certified Parent Educator meets with the family in its home to discuss child development and to enjoy parent‐child activities, including a focus on reading and literacy. These visits occur monthly or bimonthly.

SCREENINGS

A developmental screening is completed annually for those who are enrolled in personal visits. This screening enables families to connect through early interventions, such as speech therapy or physical therapy, if a delay is detected. Screenings also include hearing and vision questionnaires.

GROUP MEETINGS

Weekly playgroups meet throughout Wayne County in elementary schools, churches, and community centers. Adults and young children enjoy meeting new friends as they play side‐by‐side. A Parent Educator is available and parenting topics are addressed each month.

Book Buddies is for children ages 3‐5 accompanied by an adult. These one hour workshops include music, games, crafts, snacks, and of course—books! Each child leaves with a new book and families are encouraged to repeat activities from the workshop in their homes.

RESOURCE NETWORK

Wayne County has many programs and resources for families with young children. Birth‐to‐Five’s staff assist families in connecting – from the local library story hour to adult education opportunities…and much, much more!
